Advocacy in Action
CFUW Abbotsford is committed to advocacy based on CFUW National and Provincial policies. Our Advocacy Committee meets several times during the year to address issues that are brought to our attention through our national organization (CFUW) or through BC Council. We advocate by writing letters to our MP's, MLA's and our local City Council outlining our concerns.
CFUW Clubs have the opportunity to develop resolutions at the provincial or national level. In 2013, CFUW Abbotsford presented a resolution, "Truth in Language" which was adopted at the AGM of BC Council. Our resolution encourages the government of BC to ensure that all BC government reports, policies, web pages, press releases and any other written communication discontinue the use of the term child pornography and replace its usage with the term images of child abuse.
As part of our National Initiative to address Child and Family Poverty, CFUW Abbotsford has supported local Transition Houses by distributing "comfort bags" for the women and children who are housed there. As well, CFUW Abbotsford supports our local Warm Zone, a drop in facility for street engaged women, by preparing a weekly meal of hot soup through the months of October to May.
In 2007, CFUW Abbotsford made a proposal to Abbotsford City Council to designate a greenway/walking trail on local McKee Peak. Our Advocacy Committee continues to work towards this goal.
